What’s in a model contract?

A professional model contract governs the relationship between model and agency. The most important points:

Exclusivity: do you work only with this agency, or with others too?
Commission: what share of your fee does the agency receive? (Common: 15–25%)
Term: how long does the contract run? Are there notice periods?
The model’s obligations: availability, measurement stability, reporting duties
Image rights: who is allowed to use your photos for marketing?

Exclusive contracts mean: you work only with one agency. This can be good (full support, booking guarantee) — or bad (few bookings, still tied down).

An exclusive contract is only as good as the agency behind it. Ask yourself: how many bookings do they make per month?

Exclusive: only one agency, but in return full support and priority
Non-exclusive: several agencies possible — but none feels fully responsible
Mother-agency model: one main agency, others as sub-representatives — the most common middle ground

Commission: what’s fair?

The agency commission is calculated on the gross fee. Typical rates:

15%: cheap, common with smaller agencies
20%: standard in Germany
25%+: only justified with very active marketing and a large network

Caution: agencies that additionally take money from the client (double-dipping) are not reputable.

Red flags in the contract

Advance payments for sedcard or admission — reputable agencies don’t demand this
Terms of more than 2 years without an exit clause
Vague clauses on image rights — who is allowed to use your face and for how long?
No exact commission rates — only “customary commission”
No possibility to terminate the contract in case of inactivity

Terminating your contract — what’s possible?

With reputable agencies there are clear notice periods — usually 3 months to the end of the year or in the event of inactivity. Read the clause carefully: some contracts renew automatically.
