Model Tips: Dos and Don’ts – What Successful Models Do Differently
What sets a successful model apart from one who gives up after three castings? Rarely is it the measurements — usually it’s the behaviour. CM Models has compiled the most important dos and don’ts from hundreds of castings and shoots.
The dos: what successful models do right
Punctuality as a non-negotiable
In the modelling business, the rule is: on time is late. Anyone who’s there 10 minutes before the start is punctual. Anyone who arrives right on the minute is considered unreliable. Clients remember for years the models who delayed shoots.
Showing naturalness at castings
- Minimal make-up — let your face speak
- Neutral, body-conscious clothing (no pattern, no statement piece)
- Hair loose or neatly tied back — not hidden
- Know your measurements by heart: height, weight, clothing size, shoe size
Accepting feedback
Scouts and photographers give instructions — including ones that feel odd. Anyone who implements them right away without discussion gets booked. Anyone who explains why they’d rather do it differently, doesn’t.
- Only publish campaigns after the client’s approval
- Tag brands and photographers in posts
- No drama, no conflicts in public — the industry is small
“A model’s career doesn’t begin at the first shoot — it begins at the first casting appointment.”
The don’ts: what costs models their career
No-shows and last-minute cancellations
A job cancelled shortly beforehand often costs the client thousands of euros in follow-up costs. Models who do this don’t get booked again — and the agency informs other clients.
Unilateral changes to your look
- Changing hair colour, cut or tattoos without consultation
- Extreme weight changes during an active booking phase
- Piercings that weren’t disclosed in the application
Casting arrogance
Being confident is good. Being arrogant is career-killing. Scouts notice immediately when someone thinks they’re doing the client a favour — instead of the other way round.
Too many agencies at once
Some beginners write to dozens of agencies at the same time. It sounds strategic but is counterproductive: a good agency works exclusively or at least with one fixed main representative.
The most important tip of all
Treat modelling like any other job: professionally, reliably, with genuine interest in what you’re doing. The models CM Models has accompanied over the years aren’t the ones with the best measurements — they’re the ones with the best attitude.
