International model markets: where are the opportunities?
The big fashion capitals
- Milan & Paris: High fashion, runway, couture. Very competitive, very selective.
- New York: Commercial and editorial. Broad demand, good earning potential.
- Tokyo & Seoul: Asian markets love European models. Often lucrative advertising deals.
- London: Creative, avant-garde. Good for models with a distinctive look.
- Dubai & the Middle East: Growing market. High fees, but be mindful of cultural rules.
Germany as a base
The German market offers stable commercial bookings, especially in catalog, advertising and e-commerce. It’s a good starting point for an international career.
Requirements for international jobs
Look & book
International clients often decide based on the portfolio alone. A high-quality, versatile book is a must. Important: real bookings count more than test shoots.
Measurements and standards
Different standards apply depending on the market:
- High fashion (Milan/Paris): often very specific measurement requirements
- Commercial (New York/Germany): more flexible, personality matters more
- Asia (Tokyo/Seoul): its own aesthetic standards, often different preferences
Language skills
English is a must. Additional languages (French for Paris, Japanese for Tokyo) are a plus, but not required.
How do I get international jobs?
Option 1: through a German agency with international partners

Never go abroad without a contract – not even for just a small job.

- What happens if a job gets cancelled?
- Are there repayment obligations for advance payments?
Visa & work permit
Depending on the country, you’ll need a work visa. Working without a valid work permit is illegal and can lead to deportation. Always inform yourself in advance.
Taxes
Foreign income must be taxed in Germany. Double taxation agreements regulate what applies where. Definitely consult a tax advisor.
Insurance
Foreign health insurance is a must. Trip cancellation insurance can also make sense.
Living abroad as a model: the reality
Model apartments
Many agencies abroad offer model apartments – affordable flats shared by several models. This sounds cheap, but can get expensive if costs are deducted from future fees. Always clarify this in advance!
Loneliness and homesickness
The glamorous life abroad also has its downsides. Many young models struggle with loneliness, pressure and a lack of social networks. A stable support network at home and regular contact with family and friends are important.
Work-life balance
An international career often means: lots of travel, little free time, irregular working hours. You need to want and be able to handle that.
