Malia in Kapstadt – Jobs, Castings und Modeln in Südafrika
As a model abroad – for many models, both newcomers and professionals, a constant topic. With an overseas stay, several plans come your way, and you are rewarded with plenty of experiences and adventures – no matter where in the world you are. Many young models worry about whether they can manage on their own abroad, what exactly to expect, and which country or city is the right choice. Malia from CM Models is currently traveling as a model in Cape Town. I spoke with her about her overseas stay in this South African dream city. Model Malia: “Cape Town was a coincidence”
CM: Malia, you have been in South Africa as a model for several weeks/months now. What have you experienced there so far as a model?
Here you experience a lot – from shootings, sightseeing, surfing to shark diving. Cape Town is extremely versatile in every aspect.
CM: How did you come to South Africa, specifically Cape Town?
Honestly, Cape Town was more of a coincidence. My friend wanted to do an exchange semester at the university there and I thought, I could just come along and model there. Since we had already been there once a year ago for a vacation and had an agency there, it was then very easy to actually implement the plan.
CM: How did you prepare for your stay beforehand?
Ultimately, you don’t need to prepare for Cape Town, the only difficult or “prolonged” thing is the work visa, you should plan about 2–3 weeks for that, until you have all the documents together and go to the embassy in Berlin. It is also important what clothes you bring. I say this very explicitly because Cape Town does not offer good and high-quality shopping opportunities (in terms of shootings). So if you intend to test, you should bring a lot of clothes.

CM: Wie sind deine Erfahrungen in Kapstadt als Model bisher?
Es ist extrem viel Konkurrenz unterwegs, Castings können länger sein, als man will, und Direct Booking gibt es leider kaum. Die Jobs sind toll und man hat Möglichkeiten, die man in Deutschland nicht hätte, und die Tests sind super.
CM: Aus deiner Erfahrung: Welche Models sind in Südafrika besonders gefragt?
Ü30-Models mit blonden, kurzen Haaren. Außerdem männliche Models.
CM: Wie sieht die Model-Industrie in Kapstadt aus?
Es gibt extrem viele Agenturen und im Sommer (deutscher Winter) pilgern die Kunden nach Kapstadt und produzieren dort, aufgrund der geringen Kosten. Ja, auch die Modelgagen fallen etwa halb so gut aus, wie im Vergleich zu Deutschland. Man kommt sich vor wie in einem deutschen Dorf, denn es sind extrem viele deutsche Models/Fotografen/MUAs vor Ort.
CM: Welche Jobs hast du in Kapstadt bisher gemacht? Wie sind diese abgelaufen?
Sportjobs – es wird viel in dieser Hinsicht dort produziert, aber auch TV-Commercials. Der Ablauf ist nicht anders als in Deutschland, vielleicht ein Unterschied: Nach dem Casting gibt es immer einen Callback, sprich ein zweites Casting. Wenn man dann genommen wird,, gibt es einen Tag nur fürs Fitting und dann wird erst produziert. Die Tage sind lang, da man sehr früh anfängt zu shooten (wegen des Lichts). Über die Mittagszeit wird selten gearbeitet, weil das Licht zu hart ist, und es geht dann meistens erst nachmittags weiter.
CM: Wie sehen deine typischen Tagesabläufe in Südafrika als Model aus?
Die Agenturen kommunizieren via SMS und schicken einem die Castings. Dann geht man in die verschiedenen Castingstudios und hofft, dass nicht wieder 100 andere Leute auf das gleiche Casting warten. Die Wartezeiten variieren von 10 Minuten bis zu 4 Stunden pro Casting.
Es gibt normale Castings (hier sind die Wartezeiten locker 1–4 Stunden) und „requested” Castings (dort wird man ganz speziell angefragt, hat einen Termin und kommt meistens direkt dran). Requested Castings sind immer die, wo man die besten Chancen hat, weil der Kunde einen anhand seiner Bilder schon ausgewählt hat und somit sehen will.
CM: Wie wohnst du und wie bist du an deine Bleibe gekommen? Was empfiehlst du?
Die Agenturen helfen oder stellen Unterkünfte. Ich bin jedoch kein Fan von Model-Appartements, und daher haben wir uns über Airbnb selbst eine Unterkunft gesucht. Diese war zwar nicht direkt in Kapstadt City, aber nur 15 Minuten davon entfernt, günstiger und am Strand – was mir besser gefällt. Wenn man eine eigenständige Person ist und gerne selber organisiert, kann ich sowas nur empfehlen. Wenn man sich vielleicht unsicher ist, sollte man die Hilfe der Agentur in Anspruch nehmen.

CM: Was sind deine persönlichen Kapstadt Highlights?
Mein Highlight war eines meiner letzten Testshootings mit dem Fotografen Jacques Weyers (fotografiert unter anderem für Elle Southafrica und World of Swimsuits). Wir haben ein Editorial geshootet, was mir persönlich sehr am Herzen lag und in dem ich mich einfach sehr gut wiederfinden konnte. Außerdem war ich das einzige Model mit dem Jacques getestet hat, was für mich wie ein kleiner Ritterschlag war.
CM: Welche Model-Hot-Spots würdest du anderen Models weiter empfehlen?
Die Food Markets in Kapstadt sind der Wahnsinn, außerdem bin ich ein Fan von einigen Restaurants: Kloofstreet House, Cafe Paradiso, Simply Asia, Beluga und Black Sheep. Osumo macht die besten Smoothies und zum feiern: Era, Tschin Tschin Rooftopbar, Shimmy Beachclub.
CM: Was gefällt dir am Modeln in Kapstadt? Was ist eher problematisch?
Ich finde die Locations in Kapstadt traumhaft. Wenn man Tests machen möchte, kann man extrem viele Settings haben und sein Buch sehr aufbessern.
Problematisch ist dann wiederum, dass die Gagen leider nicht so gut sind und man in Kapstadt was die Kriminalität angeht einfach aufpassen muss.
CM: Was muss ein Model in Südafrika besonders beachten? (Regeln, Bräuche, Unterschiede zu Deutschland etc.)
Kapstadt ist zwar sehr westlich/europäisch, aber ja es gibt Townships und die Kriminalität ist hoch. Abends wenn es dunkel geht sollte man nicht alleine raus oder an den Strand, man sollte nicht zu viele Wertgegenstände mit sich rum tragen, zu teure Kleidung tragen, sich in Gespräche auf der Straße verwickeln lassen oder einfach mit Leuten mitgehen. Man sollte einfach etwas aufmerksam sein, was um einen herum passiert. Wenn man sich ein Auto mietet muss man damit rechnen, dass die Leute extrem schlecht und unkoordiniert Auto fahren. Wir hatten einen kleinen Unfall, weil uns jemand ins Auto gefahren ist (nur Blechschaden) und mir wurde meine Kreditkarte am Automaten gestohlen. Man muss sich dieser Dinge einfach bewusst sein, wenn man dort ist und plant dorthin zu fliegen. Trotzdem muss man keine Angst haben vor Ort, denn wenn man diese Dinge einfach beachtet ist man sicher.
Kapstadt für das Model-Book – Deutschland für die Model-Gage
CM: Was nimmst du von deinem Aufenthalt in Südafrika mit nach Deutschland?
Kapstadt ist gut fürs Book und für die Erfahrung jedoch muss man einfach sagen, dass man dort „bezahlten Urlaub” macht und Plus Minus Null nach Deutschland zurückkommen wird.
CM: Würdest du Südafrika, speziell Kapstadt für andere Models weiter empfehlen? Warum?
Ich denke für Newfaces ist Kapstadt toll, man kann sein Buch mit tollen Fotografen aufbauen, vor allem in Hinsicht auf Commercials. Dann denke ich auch, dass Kapstadt sehr gut für Models Ü30 ist, weil der Markt dort sehr vielseitig ist und man als Model auch im hohen Alter sehr gut dort arbeiten kann. Wenn man in dieses Raster fällt oder einfach Modeln im Ausland möchte kann ich Kapstadt empfehlen, wenn man jedoch denkt, man wird das große Geld dort machen muss ich leider sagen, bleib in Deutschland.

Experienced models with existing test shoots, a well-filled application portfolio and a serious agency behind them are clearly better positioned to actually get bookings abroad.
