Choreography
Choreographing a fashion show and wondering what exactly that means? Here’s a quick explanation in the Model Wiki: Choreography is an essential part of fashion shows and presentations, for example at customer showrooms for major fashion brands. It refers to the planned movements, steps and positions that models perform on the catwalk in order to present the clothes in the best possible way. The choreographer is the person who designs and coordinates these movements.
Why a choreography?
At a fashion show, but also in showrooms, 5 to 20 models come together. The processes have to be precisely planned, after all, customers are there as guests to whom the fashion is presented.
This is the only way to make a fashion show perfect!
Example: Chanel fashion show
Here you can see an example in XXL from Chanel. Hundreds of guests, fashion magazines like Vogue, buyers from exclusive boutiques, influencers. Every step has to be right! That’s exactly what the choreography is for.
Or here, Artur for Emporio Armani.
The role of the choreographer: tasks
The choreographer is an experienced person who is specially trained to instruct models in the appropriate movements and poses for the fashion show. Their job is to make the presentation of the clothes as appealing as possible. They help the models to learn the correct posture, gait and gestures to emphasize the clothes.
This involves a lot, among other things:
- Select outfit
- Prepare your make-up and hairstyle
- Follow the choreographer’s instructions
- Practicing poses and movements
- Run in sync with other models
- Present yourself confidently and professionally
- Present clothing elegantly
- Pay attention to the audience and cameras
- Follow the instructions of the organizer
- Organize your wardrobe and accessories
- Use breaks efficiently
- Clean up after the show and say thank you
- Collect feedback and learn
- Maintaining health and fitness
Perfect staging of clothing at shows
Choreography is used to ensure that the clothes are shown off in the best possible way. This can mean that models perform certain movements to emphasize the shape, cut or details of the clothing. A good choreographer knows how to draw the audience’s attention to the most important elements.
Coordination and synchronization
In group performances, models have to walk and move in sync. The choreographer ensures that all models act in unison to create a harmonious overall image. This requires training and practice so that the movements are precise and coordinated.
Security and self-confidence
That’s part of it too! After all, as a model you are the focus of every show and presentation.
The choreographer therefore also helps models to feel confident and self-assured on the catwalk. They offer guidance and feedback to reduce insecurities and help the models feel comfortable in their role!
