Castings & Contests – The wait in front of the model jury
Model casting or contest, both events serve to discover and select talented models. This is where it is decided which model is accepted into a model agency or which model gets the job! For new faces, however, the first casting usually begins at the model agency. Back to overview > Becoming a model
Agency Casting
The casting is the first step on the way to a modeling career. It is important that young models present themselves well and show their potential in order to attract the attention of the agency and advance their career.
During the casting, the models are photographed by the model scouts to obtain simple Polaroids and to see how the model performs in front of the camera. It is important that they present themselves in simple clothes and high heels to show their natural beauty and posture.
The overall appearance also plays an important role – from hairstyle and make-up to body structure, as measurements may also be taken during the casting to ensure that the model meets the agency’s requirements. No make-up is definitely a plus point, as naturalness and a professional and friendly appearance are of great importance in the industry.

Job Casting
A model job casting, on the other hand, is a selection process in which models are chosen for a specific job or assignment. The casting is carried out by a client, a photographer or a company in order to select the right model for the project in question.
During a model job casting, models are often judged according to certain criteria such as age, height, hair color or experience. The selection also depends on the type of project – for example, a casting for a fashion show or a commercial may have different requirements than a casting for a photo shoot in a magazine.
Advertising clients or designers organize open or closed model castings to find suitable models for their products or fashion collections to be marketed.
Closed casting
In a closed model casting, the potential clients contact the model agency of the models and select the models who are to appear at the casting in advance. This is also known as a “go-see”. Each model brings their customized sedcard and model book to the casting.
Open casting
Any model who would like to get the job can take part in an open model casting. Agencies often pass these on to their models, but a model can also become aware of an open casting and take part through advertising.
Contest
A model contest differs from a casting in that it is a competition in which many models compete against each other to win a prize or award.
A model contest is often about who looks the best or who has the most skills on the catwalk or in front of the camera. The models compete in different categories and often have to present a special choreography, a particular theme or a special type of clothing.
