Become a model at 14 years old: School comes first!
Plain text: Becoming a model at 14 is very difficult, especially because you still need to focus on school. Having good grades will help you throughout your entire life, even if you later have to calculate your fees as a model and, for example, once understand the exchange rate between the euro and the dollar. There are also many other questions, as well as good language training, so that you fit perfectly in commercials with voiceover text. It also involves foreign languages, but also geographical knowledge.

Knowledge from school is also important later on set and during breaks: Small Talk. Do you want to appear “stupid” or uninformed in Small Talk with a client? Let’s say you are talking about Asia and cities like Hong Kong, Shanghai Fashion Week or Tokyo Fashion Week, then it would be perfect if you could say a little about them. That’s why school is so important for you, regardless of whether it’s your own language, a foreign language, math or geography. With this, you are perfectly prepared to later work internationally as a model.
That means: If you start at 14 years old, you still need a lot of patience alongside your school until you can really work.
Dream Job Modeling: Building Phase in Young Years
If you still want to apply to a model agency anyway, you should make sure to talk to your parents first. They should always be informed about your plans, as the agency will definitely want to speak to your parents once you are at least 14 years old. Become a model means more than just waiting for jobs; first, you need to build your model portfolio. This means you will have many test shoots with photographers to gradually collect image material. However, it is not the quantity of photos that matters, but the quality of the photographers. If you apply to a good model agency at the age of 14, you will have access to the best photographers in your city and state from the very beginning.
After building your portfolio come your first model castings and jobs
Once your portfolio is ready, you will start getting your first jobs. Here is the next challenge, if you want to become a model at the age of 14, you must get permission from your school to be excused from classes. We come back again to the topic of good grades, the better you are in school, the more willing your school and teacher will be to grant you time off.
You can’t afford to take this luxury too often, because new exams will keep coming your way. So if you want to become a model early on, you definitely need to have a lot of patience with your setup. Most jobs you won’t be able to do. For many client requests, you first have to give an option. An option means you keep that day free. If you are then booked, the job starts. However, if another model is booked instead, the day is free again and you don’t get the job. If you now have to get permission from your school every time and only get a job every fourth time, the school will eventually stop cooperating – understandable. That’s why you need a professional and experienced model agency, they know exactly which jobs to offer you and which not to.
You can already see that becoming a model at the age of 14 is not so easy, so you should definitely be patient! It’s best to wait until you are 15 or 16 years old, then school will be over in no time and you can fully concentrate on modeling.
Minimum measurements for models
As you can read in our article Requirements for Models, the minimum measurements indicate that you should bring a height of 174 cm as a model. If you want to work internationally as a female model, you should even be 178 cm tall. Your height should not exceed 181 cm, male models start at 185 cm. If you wear high heels as a woman, you would already surpass the first men, but at 181 cm you are already very tall. As mentioned, male models have a minimum height of 185 cm. The maximum height should not exceed 195 cm. Whether you are a male or female model, you should have a slim figure, pay attention to your diet and exercise. And of course, there are always exceptions. More about Measurements for Models.
Models and Sport: Define Yourself Rather Than Hardcore Training
As a model, you shouldn’t overdo it with sports, because if your muscles grow too much, you won’t fit into the standard sizes anymore. As a woman, you should train very definedly, but as a man, you should also be careful that your muscles don’t become too large. Why is that so? On the one hand, as described, you won’t fit into the standard sizes of fashion designers anymore. On the other hand, in the field of advertising, models are ultimately elements of advertising, so that people can identify with the person (you). If your body or your proportions deviate too much from the standard, fewer people will be able to identify with you, and ultimately fewer people will buy the product of your client. Modeling therefore also involves a lot of ambition and a bit of psychology or people knowledge. Did you think that? Keep that in mind if you often do sports, especially strength training.

Become a model at 14 years old — school, opportunities and first steps
At 14 years old, the interest in modeling begins to grow for many teenagers. A first entry is possible — if school, family and agency work well together.
What is possible in modeling at 14 years old?
- Youth fashion campaigns for brands targeting the age group 13–17
- Sport brand campaigns — casual clothing, school sports equipment, outdoor looks
- School and everyday looks for catalogs and online stores
- Teen magazines and youth publications showing age-appropriate fashion
- First test shoot experiences to build a portfolio
Not part of the program are appearances on adult runways, campaigns for cosmetics with a body focus, and any production that does not comply with youth protection.
Combining school and modeling
School obligation comes first — it is a legal requirement. Jobs mostly take place during school holidays. Weekend shootings are possible if school performance is not affected. The daily working time is legally limited. Written parental consent is mandatory for each individual job.
Measurements and Requirements at 14
At the age of 14, high-fashion measurements are not expected. What matters most: natural look, proportions rather than measurements, expression and presence, reliability. Agencies that put 14-year-olds under pressure to achieve certain measurements are not serious.
Serious Application at 14 — Checklist for Parents
- No upfront fees: Serious agencies do not demand course fees, mandatory shootings or entry fees.
- Transparent contract: All conditions must be clearly and understandably written down.
- Age-appropriate jobs: The contract must clearly state that exclusively youth productions are arranged.
- Parental accompaniment: Parents have the right to be present during castings and photo shoots.
Common Questions
Do I need perfect measurements at 14?
No. In youth modeling, natural appearance, proportions, and presence are important — there are no set body measurements.
Can I participate with CM Models at 14?
CM Models works with teenagers if the legal requirements are met: parental consent, youth protection, school priority. The application is done together with parents.
What happens to modeling after school?
As you get older — from 16 or 18 years — the opportunities expand significantly. Those who build a portfolio early have better starting conditions after school.
